The punishments for conspiring to commit a crime are harsh. Illinois law categorizes conspiracy penalties according to the underlying crime which the conspirators planned to commit.
A conspiracy to commit a Class X felony is considered a Class 1 felony, punishable by four to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $25,000. A conspiracy to commit a Class 1 felony is considered a Class 2 felony. Then so on and so forth.
