In the state of Illinois, an aggravated speeding citation is a misdemeanor speeding ticket that comes with heavier (and more painful) consequences than your average traffic offense. You may be pulled over by police and ticketed for aggravated speeding if you are travelling at a rate that is more than 26 miles per hour above the posted speed limit.

Consequences of Aggravated Speeding in Illinois

Once considered a “petty offense” in Illinois, new traffic laws enacted in July 2013 have led to a crackdown on drivers who are caught speeding. If you are travelling between 26 and 35 miles per hour above the speed limit, you could be hit with a Class B Misdemeanor. This could put you in jail for 6 months and leave you with a $1,500 fine. If you are caught driving more than 35 miles per hour over the speed limit, this is a Class A Misdemeanor, which could result in 1 year in jail and a base fine of $2,500. (All fines are added on to court costs and legal fees.)
